The word "Process" in the context of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is very vital and we should pay maximum attention and choose our process wisely. The right choice determines the success or not of the RPA application. The observation is that RPA projects do not meet their return on investment (ROI) expectations just because of the wrong choice of process.
With so much advertising around RPA, customers or RPA leaders with limited RPA awareness often end up choosing the wrong processes in their first RPA application. Wrong choice of process does not give them the expected return on investment and disappoints them. Seeing the lowest ROI, even other business leaders tend to lose confidence in the RPA application.
Choosing a process wisely what that means. Let us first understand your main purpose or goal in implementing RPA and what it is that you want to achieve as a business leader.
(a) Are you trying to introduce RPA only to reduce the number of employees?
(b) Do you look forward to simplifying or automating the process to increase productivity?
(c) Do you look forward to automating only the complex process?
Before we can answer these questions, let's be clear in understanding what contributes to the wrong choice of RPA process.
(a) If the logic of your process or business rules continue to change frequently and with increasing frequency, then this process is not suitable to be a good candidate for the RPA process choice. New business rules mean reshaping every time business rules or logic change.
(b) If your process is dependent on government or regulatory changes that continue to change frequently, then this process will not yield the best return on investment for RPA implementation.
(c) If your process has a low volume of data or if the process you have chosen is one that only runs once in a given year (eg Annual Employee Evaluation), such processes do not give the best ROI results or are not equivalent with labor-saving hours.
Before entering the heart of understanding the process, it would be ideal to first make an initial evaluation of the process and determine which process fits best based on the above few tips.
To summarize - Choose the process for automating robotic processes wisely - Those rule-based processes are stable, have a large amount of data, and where business rules do not change often.
